Natürlich baut man gleich einen Blog dazu und beschreibt erstmal, wie so coole Ideen das Licht der Welt erblicken. Natürlich vergießt man nicht, den begierigen Leser darüber zu informieren, was Gadgets eigentlich sind:

Have you ever wondered how new technologies get developed in Microsoft? Wonder how a cool idea goes from incubation to release? Well, we’re excited to announce that we’ve started a blog designed to bring you closer to the process with the Gadgets blog and we’re kicking it off at the PDC.
What are Gadgets? Gadgets are a new category of mini-application designed to provide information, useful lookup, or enhance an application or service on your Windows PC or the Web. Examples might include a weather gadget running on your desktop or on your homepage, an RSS Gadget that pulls in your favorite feeds, or an extension of a business application providing just-in-time status on the pulse of your business.
Na gut - aber schon zwei Tage später erfahren wir, daß die Entwicklung eigentlich bereits 2001 begann:
… While work started prior, in September 2001, a team of Microsoft researchers published a paper entitled, “Sideshow: Providing peripheral awareness of important information” including findings of their project. From the abstract:
A fundamental issue with user interfaces is how to help users stay aware of information without being overly intrusive or distracting. In this paper we describe Sideshow, a peripheral awareness interface designed to help users stay aware of people and information. We present data from a field trial of Sideshow where several hundred employees within our company used Sideshow over a seven-month period of time. The data indicate that Sideshow’s design accomplishes the goal of providing awareness of important information without being overly distracting.
The research paper provides screenshots that bear a striking resemblance to the Windows Sidebar. The paper is a good read for anyone thinking about Gadget development. For folks who have visited Microsoft campuses, you may recall the posters in elevator hallways and Sidebar running on many employees desktops. Technically one of the first teams to implement this concept …
Ein Gedanke liegt nahe: “Nanu - das kenn ich doch?!“. In der Tat - es sieht ein bißchen so aus wie die Widgets für das Dashboard von Mac OS X. Und damit wird die Sache langsam spannend:
Bei Apple hießen die Widgets auch mal Gadgets, was die Freude über diese wirklich neue Idee weltweit verständlich macht. Aber noch etwas fällt auf:
Auch Apple gegenüber gegenüber gibt es kritische Stimmen. Der Vorwurf: Apple soll beim Dashboard den Konfabulator von Pixoria kopiert haben. Doch dieser Auffasssung sollte man nicht vorschnell folgen - insbesondere wenn man sich mal die Hintergründe beider Applikationen ansieht. Pixoria und Konfabulator sind mittlerweile bei Yahoo! untergekommen - und sind unter widgets.yahoo.com frei für Windows und Mac OS X verfügbar.
